Description & Uses
TPO (thermoplastic olefin) is a single ply roofing system that consists of a thermoplastic polyolefin membrane. This membrane is composed of three layers: TPO polymer base, Polyester-reinforced fabric center (scrim), and Thermoplastic polyolefin compounded top ply. Thermoplastic single-ply roofing membranes are among the fastest growing commercial roofing products and have gained broad industry acceptance for their many performance and installation advantages. As demand increases for heat-reflective and energy efficient roofing systems, thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) single-ply roofing membranes continue to provide exceptional resistance to ultraviolet, ozone and chemical exposure.
Key Points & Benefits
- Economical – One of the factors that make TPO roofing attractive both in residential and commercial construction is its reasonable cost.
- Durable – In comparison to other thermoplastic membranes, TPO resists mold growth, dirt accumulation, tears impact and punctures. It is made to be flexible and can allow for building’s movement or settling. Reinforced TPO membranes can handle a building’s thermal expansion and contraction more effectively than other single ply roofing products.
- Green – White TPO meets EPA’s ENERGY STAR specifications. It reflects damaging sunrays which keeps the roof cooler, when the roof is cooler the interior of your building stays cooler allowing you to spend less money keeping your facility cool during hot summer months. TPO is also 100% recyclable and can help you meet your LEED point objectives and potentially qualify for tax credits in certain regions.
- Ease of installation – In general TPO membranes are manufactured with wider sheets. This means that the material is easier to install and there is less seams. Less work and time associated with the installation translates into direct savings for you for the cost of installation. TPO can be mechanically attached or fully adhered, but heat welding creates an impermeable surface for superior seam strength, enhanced wind uplift resistance and the best leak protection around.
